How Does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis works by tapping into the power of your subconscious mind and directing that energy towards achieving your goals. Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxed focus that allows you to access that deep, inner part of you – your subconscious mind.

Think of your subconscious mind as a powerful, go-getter within you that will achieve the goals you set for yourself, if given the appropriate directions and motivation. Imagine your subconscious as a GPS, which when given the appropriate “destination,” will help you get there, step by step. Collaborating with the subconscious mind allows us to maximize our true potential and perform at a higher level than engaging the conscious mind alone.

The Divided Mind…

Your life is driven by the two parts of your mind: your conscious mind and subconscious mind. Generally, our emotions “live” in our subconscious mind and are protected and rationalized by our conscious mind. The conscious mind is the “thinking” mind and the subconscious mind is the “feeling” mind. Willpower requires thinking and is sourced from the conscious mind. The problem with this, is that true, lasting change can only take place at the feeling, subconscious level.

When change happens at the subconscious level, it happens easily and naturally, eliminating the frustration and focus required when “trying” and  “struggling” with conscious focused energy.

Hypnosis enables us to “rewrite” underlying “scripts” – ideas, illusions and beliefs that we have about ourselves in order to affect the programming within us in a positive way and achieve our goals.

What Happens During an Appointment?

Every hypnotherapy session is unique and caters to the individual’s specific needs and goals. First, the hypnotherapist will discuss the primary issues and concerns in your life prior to hypnosis. From there, we will work together during a series of sessions, where each session lasts fifty to sixty minutes.

During the appointment, we will focus on achieving the trance state, by allowing the conscious portion of the mind to be guided into a relaxed, secondary position as a passive observer so that the hypnotherapist can communicate more directly with the subconscious mind. Consequently, the conscious mind is still present and maintains the capacity to reject any suggestions that are being offered by the hypnotherapist. A hypnotized person maintains free will and can readily exit the trance state at any time during the session.

For hypnotherapy to be most effective you must be an active, motivated participant, both during and between sessions. People seeking hypnotherapy are willing to take responsibility for their actions, work towards self-change and create greater awareness in their lives.
