What is Anxiety and Stress?

Anxiety is a natural survival mechanism; a response to a perceived threat, a trigger to a potentially life-saving fight or flight response. It’s just part of life to feel anxious on occasion—from daily stresses such as relationship problems, financial issues, work or school issues, or a medical situation. Frequent negative self-talk, such as “I’m a failure” or “there’s something wrong with me,” can also cause anxiety. But we are simply not built to live in a frequent state of anxiety. Unfortunately, modern life has made this all too common. While some people experience severe or generalized anxiety, even infrequent everyday stress can be damaging, not just to our minds, but also to our bodies and spiritual wholeness. Physical symptoms—such as a racing heart, changing breathing patterns, and other biochemical processes—can add to our emotional distress and deplete our vital energy. Therapy and medications are a common way to deal with anxiety. At EveryBody in Mind, we specialize in alternative, holistic ways to reduce anxiety or supplement other anxiety treatments.
