How Does LED Light Therapy Work?
In LED light therapy, different wavelengths of varying colors go through the skin layers to different depths and stimulate the natural healing process.
Typically, this therapy uses blue and red light.
According to experts, the red light triggers skin cells called fibroblasts to produce collagen that helps reverse skin aging. Research has also shown that it can restore hair growth in people with alopecia or baldness.
On the other hand, blue light is for treating acne. It does this by decreasing the activity of oil-producing sebaceous glands. You see, the oil they produce can clog up hair follicles, causing acne.
Moreover, blue light can also eliminate Cutibacterium acnes, a type of bacteria that causes acne. A recent study also showed that blue light can destroy this kind of bacteria present in joint infections.
What are the advantages of LED Light Therapy?
-
Convenience
The procedure usually takes only 30 minutes so it’s pretty convenient. Plus, you don’t need special preparations before the treatment.
-
Safety
In contrast to other kinds of light therapy, LEDs don’t have ultraviolet rays, so you don’t have to worry about harmful radiation.
Unlike other common skin treatments like dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser therapy, it doesn’t cause burns. In addition, it’s much safer than infrared therapy which can cause thermal burns.
However, you shouldn’t undergo this treatment if you’re taking Accutane or have skin rashes. But it’s considered safe for breastfeeding and pregnant women of all skin types.
Side effects are also rare, but you may experience some redness and inflammation.
-
Efficacy
LED light therapy is effective for many skin conditions. In a comparative study between isotretinoin and LED light therapy, both showed significant improvement. But the researchers deemed that the latter was a better choice because it was safer, less expensive, and had a shorter duration of treatment.
Meanwhile, another study concluded that blue light therapy is as effective as antibiotics for acne.
As for skin aging, a controlled trial showed that red light was able to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and skin roughness in 136 volunteers after 30 sessions. The participants also felt satisfied with the results.

Other Indications
While it’s popularly used to treat skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema, and even cancerous skin lesions, this type of light therapy is also effective for wound healing, tissue trauma, and pain management.
In fact, according to a 2016 study in the Laser Therapy Journal, it helped injured athletes recover quicker from musculoskeletal injury.
As you can see, LED light therapy is a practical and safe choice for you to have healthy and young-looking skin.
