What is Reiki?

Reiki, which means “miraculous sign” is a gentle hands-on healing technique developed in Japan during the late 19th century that transfers the energy of the reiki practitioner to the client. It contains two words, “ rei” which stands for universal, and “ki” which translates to life energy.

The modern form of Reiki is attributed to Misao Usui in the 1920s. It is a system aimed at healing one’s true self.

According to Reiki, energy may stop flowing when you experience physical or emotional trauma. This energy block eventually leads to illness. Reiki helps by making your life energy flow better so you experience balance and relaxation.

An in-depth literature review in 2014 showed that reiki can help reduce pain and anxiety. Other benefits of Reiki include helping you sleep better and supporting your well-being. 

During a Reiki session, which typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, you’ll either sit on a chair or lay on a bed while the Reiki practitioner lays his or her hands over you. Unlike acupressure or massage though, none of your body parts will be touched. But you may experience warmth or tingling sensations during the energy healing process.

Now, you might be wondering about infertility.

 

What is Infertility?

Most people think of infertility as difficulty getting pregnant. But medically speaking, infertility is being unable to conceive after a year or longer of trying. According to the CDC, it’s a pretty common problem in the US, with 19% of women aged 15 to 49 years old experiencing it.

Some of the risk factors for infertility include being over 40, smoking, alcohol use, being overweight or underweight, and lack of exercise. In addition, high levels of psychological or emotional stress can affect your ability to conceive a child. 

 

Reiki for Fertility: How Reiki Can Help

As mentioned, stress contributes to infertility, and Reiki can help reduce your stress levels.

In a large-scale study done in 2019, even just one Reiki session helped more than 1400 participants with their appetite, pain, nausea, anxiety, and depression.

Reiki can help you overcome the stress and anxiety that comes with trying to have a baby or undergoing fertility treatments. The pressure and stress may be overwhelming, especially for women who’ve had unsuccessful treatments or miscarriages.

Also, Reiki helps remove the energy blocks to encourage the healthy flow of life energy in your body. Particularly, Reiki for fertility focuses on removing the blockage at the sacral chakra or Swadhisthana, which is located below the navel. This chakra is associated with sexual pleasure, vitality, and the reproductive system. 

Some common Reiki hand positions practitioners use to support the fertility journey include:

  • Placing the hands over the belly to restore balance in the solar plexus
  • Putting the hands over the pelvic area to remove any blockages in the sacral chakra
  • Placing the hands over the ribcage to improve the energy flow of the liver
